Mr. Coward’s Site for Teachers

This is SeventhGradeEnglish.com. It’s the teacher version of my seventh grade class page. It’s the result of 18+ years of junior high middle school teaching and 13+ years on the web. Feel free to take and mutate, but give credit where credit is due.

Have fun always.

(Mr. Coward has been teaching on the beautiful central coast of California since 1989. He enjoys fruitbooting, rocking, and teaching seventh grade.)

Hey Mr. C. I am just finished up reading The Outsiders for the 75th time (3 times a year for 25 years) and I have watched the movie that many times or even more. I just want to give you a shout out for your fantastic blog and web page and I like the new look.

Thank you so much for the kudos. 25 years? Wow. That goes back to the 80′s stylie. You probably saw the movie when it came out! That’s a lot of cheese. The novel isn’t far removed from those times. Isn’t it funny when you do the math like that for the kids? “Whoa…how do you know this book so well?” Well, duh. My math works out like this: 15 (years teaching the novel) X 5 (periods per year) + 4 or 5 times when I was a lad = about 80. I figure we’re pretty even ;)

I also like to do the math for the kids when they complain if I lag on returning essays. “Let’s see, you probably want me to spend at least, well, 6 minutes on each one. There are 140 of you. What’s 6 times 140?” Pause, wait 1/2 hour, ignore wrong guesses, then… “Yes, 840 minutes. How many hours is that?” Repeat previous procedure. “Yes, 14 hours. I don’t know about you, but I have a life.”

Thanks again for the kind words.
